Third Sunday of Easter Homily – April 18, 2021

Third Sunday of Easter (B) 2021

INTRO: There’s a “catchy”’ commercial on TV for the CAPTIAL ONE BANK CARD: “What’s in your wallet?”

So, I want to use that question, but in a different way:

“What’s in your refrigerator?”

So, I asked the kids at children’s’ mass last Friday that question and OH MY the answers I got…
Apples
Yogurt
Pizza
And so on!!!
BOTTOM LINE, each child can go to their refrigerator and become happily nourished! Parents always provide as best as they can.
What is it about food? It affects us all, doesn’t it?

This appearance story is unique in that John has Jesus when he first appears…. He asks if there is any food to eat??

WHY?

First of all, I think it was because THEY always dined together …… this small community of Apostles and Jesus.
They were friends, bonded in a mission of faith and love. He enjoyed them. They enjoyed him. This was hospitality at its finest on this EASTER SUNDAY meeting.

He missed them, so why not eat and pick up where we left off!

Secondly, this hospitality of dining together foreshadows the best nourishment of all when we, today, come together around this TABLE, this ALTAR as friends, bonded in a mission of faith and love.

We are, today, carrying on the work of the Apostles that began so long ago.
We can only do this with HIS nourishment, for when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim His death until he comes again!

We become Him for the entire world to see. And even at home with your SPIRITUAL COMMUNION we become other Christ’s through our reception of this Holy Communion. That is why this holy food is so important to us, to the church, and to the world!

Our church and world needs other CHRIST’S walking around, behaving in His image and likeness.

Would that the entire world’s unrest with guns and riots could be so nourished????

CONCLUSION

So, maybe instead of “What’s in your wallet?” or “What’s in your refrigerator?” it should be:
“What’s in your church?”
And the answer being:

THE REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS CHRIST IN THE FORM OF BREAD AND WINE!
