Ascension of the Lord Homily – June 1, 2025

Ascension Sunday 2025 C

INTRO: When we Singler kids were little, we fought with one another…. very typical:
*That is mine, give it back to me
*I am not doing it, because I did it last time

*I hate you
*Mom, she is picking on me
And so on….

ASK……………. So, raise your hands if anybody here recognizes this? I thought so!
I mention this because after we were fighting, it was our mom that taught us to SAY THAT WE WERE SORRY!

“Go tell your brother you are sorry and make up with him.”

This Ascension GOSPEL is telling us that JESUS said to the first priests, as he was to ascend into heaven,
“GO AND PREACH THERE IS REPENTENCE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS!”

You know, fighting with your brother or sister is a SIN! A venial sin. And when we sin, venial or mortal, we are supposed to say we are sorry to the people with whom we fought.

JESUS was teaching the apostles, the first priests, to preach to the world that people need to recognize that they sin and then say you are sorry.

But I have been troubled these days,
Some people think in this way:

“Oh, that’s nothing really”
“Hey, I do that all the time”
“She understands”

Well…. Whether it is nothing really, or I do it all the time, or she understands, it is still a sin that needs to be acknowledged and then it is taught by JESUS to tell that person you are sorry for committing that sin…..even if you have to tell that person over and over again!

The Ascension is our reminder that WE are left with the responsibility to listen to what JESUS taught who taught us that there is repentance for the forgiveness of sins, but only if we acknowledge the sin and say we are sorry.

We, Christians and Catholics, are to want that REPENTENCE in our lives.

And repentance comes only when we admit and acknowledge the sin and then say to our brother or sister that we are sorry for what we have done to them.

That wonderful, grace-filled feeling of repentance comes ONLY after that verbal exchange.

CONCLUSION:

So, think about your home life and if you say you are sorry to someone…. will it enhance your relationship with those around you.
There is repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
