Pastor Letter – Praying the Liturgy of the Hours – Emailed September 30, 2022

Dear Parishioners,

From ancient times the church has had the custom of celebrating each day the LITURGY OF THE HOURS. In this way the church fulfills the Lord’s precept to pray without ceasing, at once offering its praise to God the Father and interceding for the salvation of the world.

Priests are obliged to pray and celebrate the LITURGY OF THE HOURS each day. The laity, while not obliged, can also pray the LITURGY OF THE HOURS. IHM just experienced in early August the praying of NIGHT PRAYER from the LITURGY OF THE HOURS. I want to do this again.

Therefore, IHM will pray night prayer for the Sunday evenings of Advent, 2022:

  • November 27, 2022, at 7:00pm
  • December 4, 2022, at 7:00pm
  • December 11, 2022, at 7:00pm
  • December 18, 2022, at 7:00pm

For these evenings, IHM will have a printed worship aid for these four-night prayers for your use. Jeff Mills, Jeff Andrea, and Kira Andrea have agreed to help the celebration of night prayer with music.

Also, the laity can “lead” night prayer. It does not have to be led by an ordained person, such as a priest or deacon. My hope is to develop within some of our parishioners this spiritual opportunity of leading this prayer.

If you are interested there are apps available for your smart phone or your tablet for the LITURGY OF THE HOURS and there are books also available from any religious goods store or even at Amazon.

Many blessings,
Father Jim
